| BIO
Hannah March Campbell was born and raised in Georgia. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2007, where she was the recipient of both artistic and academic scholarships. Her work springs from the sense of magic evoked through drawing and functions like a visual novel or "field guide" to a re-imagined sense of time, space, and political movements in context with biographical narratives. She depicts her animal characters as monstrous hybrids via their infusion with the weight of human situations in both mythological and scientific paradigms. She has shown works in several galleries in Chicago during the 2009 Southern Graphics Council Conference, Florida, and Tacoma, Washington and participated in exchange portfolios ranging from San Francisco Art Institute to the University of Colorado. She was the recent recipient of a Juror's Award at the 2009 Los Angeles Print Biennial, courtesy of Peter Frank. Hannah is currently working towards her MFA in Printmaking at Louisiana State University with a full teaching assistantship.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"Drawing exists at another level within the human pscyhe—it is a locus for signs by which we map the physical world, but it is itself the preeminent sign of being. Therefore, Drawing is not a window to the world, but a device for understanding our place within the universe."
Emma Dexter
I see the process of drawing as a magical storytelling device—almost as fast and versatile as thought itself. It has the power not just to relate information directly, but also the potential to build an elaborate narrative. My work employs animal characters made monstorous through their hybridization with human conditions, as a mediator between personal information and societal judgments. Animals are rarely seen as individuals in the way that humans are when depicted in art; taken singularly, the animal image can often only be read as sentimental, cute, or dangerous, but when invested with the weight of human narratives, they become open to wider-reaching expression. I am ultimately working towards creating "Contemporary Creative Nonfiction" a semi-fictionalized body of knowledge in book-object volumes, documenting an interior Monsterology as mythology.
